1. The Mandatory 30-Day Notice
Unlike same-day registrations available under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act requires patience. You cannot simply walk into an SDM office in Jaipur or Udaipur and emerge married the same day.
- The couple must file a "Notice of Intended Marriage" with the local Marriage Officer.
- At least one partner must have resided in the district where the notice is filed for a minimum of 30 days prior.
- A copy of this notice is displayed publicly on the office notice board for 30 days.
2. Handling Objections
During the 30-day period, anyone can raise an objection to the marriage. However, an objection must be based on legal grounds—for instance, if one party is underage, already married, or forced into the union. Objections based purely on caste or religion are legally invalid and will be dismissed by the Marriage Officer.
3. Solemnization and Registration
Once the 30 days have elapsed without any valid legal objections, the couple, along with three adult witnesses, must appear before the Marriage Officer. After signing the declaration book, the marriage is legally solemnized, and the certificate is issued.

- Proof of Residence in Rajasthan for at least 30 days (Aadhaar, Rental Agreement).
